The Physics of a Penalty Kick
By Gabriella Vasquez, Jake Hobson, and Pranav Pannala
For this project, our athletic director asked us to figure out the physics for a sports action to help our sports teams in the coming seasons. My group decided to research all the components that go into kicking the perfect penalty kick in soccer. Above is our finished project and to the right is the rough the draft of our storyboard and our script.
Concepts
Time- progress of events (seconds) Distance- amount of space between two points (meters) Mass- amount of matter and weight of atoms in an object (kilograms) Force- push or pull on an object (Newtons). Eq: mass multiplied by acceleration Force of Impact- the force generated when two objects meet. (Newtons) Eq: mass multiplied by velocity equals force multiplied by time. Momentum- The amount of motion that an object has. (kgm/s) Eq: momentum equals mass multiplied by velocity. Impulse- the force acting on a body and the time interval during which the force is exerted (Newtons) Eq: force multiplied by time. Kinetic energy- energy due to motion (Joule). Eq: 1/2 mass multiplied by velocity squared Vertical velocity- The velocity of an object in a vertical direction. It changed by 9.8m/s^2 each second. (meters/second) Eq: acceleration due to gravity multiplied by time. Horizontal velocity- The velocity of an object in a horizontal direction, which is constant. (meters/second) Eq: horizontal distance divided by time. Total velocity- The total velocity is found by using the horizontal and vertical velocity and finding an object's actual path by using the Pythagorean Theorem. (meters/second) Eq: a^2 + b^2 = c^2 While creating our video, we had to think about and include many key factors. We first sketched out what the main idea of our video was going to be and the different scenes and angles we would film. While creating this storyline, we also had to remember to keep it interesting enough to keep watchers enticed. We spent one day filming all the action shots on the San Marin football field and another day working on all the physics. We worked in class and got together a couple of days during lunch to be able to have more time on our film.
At one point we presented our rough draft of the video to our class and got feedback on it. We then modified what we needed to and worked on the finishing touches by adding voiceovers, subtitles, and music. Our completed project is located at the very top of the page. Reflection
During this project, I believe everyone in my class developed a new skill one way or another. Because our groups were picked based on our previous video editing history, the groups were combined of many different people with a wide variety of skills. I have played soccer since I was six years old so I already knew all about penalty kicks and I've had to shoot them during games throughout my years. But I've had very little use of editing videos and creating films so this project was very new to me. One thing that went well during this project was the actual filming of the video. I love playing with angles of the camera and different shots so I had a lot of ideas and fun actually filming our video, unfortunately, we have a lot more shots that weren't included in the final product because they didn't tie in with what we needed. Another aspect of this project that went well was even contribution. My group split the work and really came together to try to make this video the best we could. And even though Jake's the only one who appears in the video, besides my hand writing, all three of us worked on filming, editing, and creating our finished video. One thing that could've been better during this project was cooperation. Overall, I think our team worked hard and well on this project, but there were plenty of moments when we wouldn't agree or get along during the making of our video. Another thing that I believe I should work on is leadership. I believe I took charge during the planning and sketching of our video, but I've rarely edited videos before so when it came to that part I let my teammates take over and it got to the point where I was just watching them put pieces together. In the future, I can work towards improving my leadership skills and my work ethic. But all in all, I am proud of what my group was able to achieve and create, even though the audio in our video isn't the best!
