Design Step 2
September 4 - September 18
In this step, our main focus was to create three full concept designs for our vaccination patch. We were asked to create a Classification Scheme to organize our ideas. This type of document works with four different concepts for six main functions. We chose the functions through a functional decomposition flowchart. We then created four concepts for each main function that work as a subfunction of the final product. After finalizing these 24 sub functions, we chose three final design concepts. We were able to create these design concepts by going down the function list and choosing one concept for each. We then listed to pros and cons for each final design which will help us in the next design step.
The second part to this design step is creating conceptual sketches in order to better understand what each design will look like. These sketches can be found below, along with the flowchart and classification scheme at right. |
Concepts
Classification Scheme- the descriptive information for an arrangement or division of objects into groups based on characteristics which the objects have in common. Flowchart- picture of the separate steps of a process in sequential order Conceptual Sketch- a drawing used as a quick and simple way of exploring initial ideas for designs Reflection
This design step was a little overwhelming due to the fact that a team member dropped the class and we had to re-divide the workload. One pit in this section was the way we divided up to work. Two teammates did the majority of this whole section while the other contributed very little. Another pit was us failing to include our mentor until the end. Because of this, we had to go back and correct a bunch of work that could have been avoided if we included his input from the start. A peak was the extensive research we conducted during this step, which greatly helped form the true intentions behind our design. A second peak was the communication. We held zoom meeting for our group and with our mentor outside of school time during this step. Overall, the second design step got me very excited for the start of our project. |
